Subwoofer Amplifier: A Buyer’s Guide

Everyone knows how hard it can be to get your hands on the perfect sound system; the fact of the matter is the casual buyer doesn’t understand which components work well together or how to set them up properly. I recently purchased a subwoofer amplifier and was startle to discover that there is barely any goof information on this subject, so I’ve tried to compile all the things you need to know about buying a subwoofer amp right here.

If you want your subwoofer to produce a really awesome sound you will need to purchase a suitable amplifier to go with it. Buying the cheapest amp you can find is not the best way to approach this; more often than not a poor quality amp will just result in distortion and bring down the quality of your entire system. An even worse case it that you’ll blow your subwoofer because cheap amps have been known to interfere with and even cut the signal being sent by the receiver.

Apart from the subwoofer amplifier itself you also need to seriously consider purchasing a capacitor for it too. Many people avoid doing this because it isn’t actually a necessity but these are really great at boosting the performance of your sub and will help maintain constant power to it. It’s good practice to use 1 farad per every 1000 watts (RMS), by doing so you reduce the possibility of frying your alternator.

It is essential that you consider subwoofer amplifiers which have a power output which is equivalent to the power of the input being sent to it by the subwoofer. If your amplifier has an impedance of 500 watts then the subwoofer you connect it to will also need to be running at 500 watts. If you fail to match up the relative power of both components correctly you won’t be achieve the maximum audio potential and you may find that your subwoofer and amp don’t work together at all.

If you feel you’re not confident enough to choose and install a subwoofer amplifier yourself then you’re best off consulting the staff working at your local electronics store. They should have trained audio engineers in the store to advise you and they may even be able to complete the installation for you.
