A guide to the Purple Violin

If you’re considering purchasing a purple violin or are merely interested in finding out why they are so sought after then you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to provide you with a little background information about the instrument and explain why exactly they are so popular. The latter paragraphs will also discuss a few purple violins you may wish to consider.

The 4/4 Purple Violin produced by Blue Moon is one of the most popular purple violins in production today. This particular instrument features a spruce top, maple body and comes complete with ebonized fittings. This particular violin is primarily purchased by beginners and collectors, it’s a budget instrument which retails for around £75 ($140). It comes with a matching violin case which makes it quite attractive to beginners but isn’t the best sounding instrument you’ll ever hear. It was designed more as a fashion statement than anything else.

The Antoni purple violin is part of the manufacturer’s coloured violin range, this line of instruments was specifically designed to be more fun and attractive for children beginning to learn the violin. This model is more obviously aimed at the beginners market and features a carved maple back and neck, spruce top and lightweight aluminium 4 adjuster tailpiece system which makes the whole instrument a lot easier for younger players to play with. This particular model retails at £65 ($110) and comes with a violin bow and case.

The Carlo Giordano Silent Electric purple violin is a rather more expensive model than the aforementioned instruments. This instrument gives the player the unique ability to plug headphones into its body and listen to their playing through them, thence the name ‘silent’. The Giordano purple violin comes with an active 2 band graphic equalizer and volume control which gives the player more control over the tone. What makes this particular violin stand out even more than its purple finish are the cut outs taken from the lacquered spruce body, this gives the instrument a really futuristic look which some players will love and others will hate. The Carlo Giordano Silent Electric purple violin comes complete with headphones, battery, rosin and case for the bargain price of £199 ($350). This is a very cheap price tag for any violin, and when you bear in mind that the sound quality of this model is far superior to any other purple violin currently in production you can begin to see why this particular line of purple violins is so popular.

At the end of the day, when buying a purple violin you need to bear in mind that you are purchasing a gimmicky instrument. The purple violins currently on the market are not performance quality instruments and are not really suited for anything more than practice sessions. If you do have your heart set on one I would definitely recommend the silent electric violin offered by Carlo Giordano, it is by far the best performing model of the three mentioned in this article and it should be more than adequate to facilitate your learning for the first 3 years of learning the instrument.
