Learn to Play the Drums
Anyone who wants to learn how to play the drums can feel quite daunted at the whole prospect; unfortunately, drum kits are rather more expensive than most other instruments which make it difficult for beginners to get into playing them at all. If you’ve never played the drums before you may not be willing to spend so much money on an instrument which you are not even sure you will stick with. This article is designed to teach you how you can begin learning the basics of drumming without having to invest in a drum set.
One of the very first things any player needs to do before they can learn to play the drums is to learn how to hold drumsticks properly and play a few basic drum beats. There are many resources on the internet which will be able to explain to you how to do this, I recommend watching videos because they are far easier to follow. Avoid any lengthy articles, these can be very difficult to follow and can be rather tedious.
Another way to learn to play the drums without actually owning a kit is by sitting on a chair up against a table, much the same as if you were sitting down for dinner, and begin to tap your hands and feet against the top of the table and the floor (respectively of course). You may see this as rather frivolous but it will definitely allow you to practice your ability to keep a beat, which is essential when learning to play the drums.
If you want to begin making progress to learning the drums without making a huge investment, you can check out some books and websites which teach some of the basic techniques of drumming. Websites which try to get their visitors to learn the drums online using a variety of videos and other multimedia can be incredibly helpful. Sometimes transferring what you read in a book to a real life situation can be hard, that’s why I always recommend students refer to educational videos.
You can also get started by buying a pair of drumsticks and a practice pad. The best practice pads can actually replicate the actual bounce produced by a real drum. There are many pads to choose from, the Promark PMZ pad has been hugely popular ever since its introduction because of the amount of features it offers. The PMZ pad actually produces a realistic rattling sound thanks to ball bearings which are located inside it!
If you really want to learn to play the drums you should not underestimate the amount of practicing you can without even touching a drum kit. Using just the equipment I have mentioned above you can get well on your way to learning basic rhythm patterns and beats. Wannabe drummers also need to bear in mind that it can take quite a while to get the handling of the sticks right, so there’s plenty for you to work on even without a fancy kit.
As a final note I would like to point out that once you do make the decision to purchase your first drum set, it is essential that you select one which is actually a joy to play and will keep you coming back for more. Learning to play the drums is hard and if you buy a kit which really isn’t comfortable to play you may become disheartened by the hours of practice you are required to do to get where you want to be. Many beginners actually find electronic drum kits easy to use because they don’t require quite as much storage space and they can be folded up and transported rather easily.
