How to find free keyboard music sheets

A lot of keyboard and piano players alike get frustrated when they can’t find transcriptions of their favourite pop songs on the net, finding sheet music  can be tricky but there are a few simple tricks you can use to find what you’re for. This article aims to equip you with the a few tricks of the trade which will help you find free keyboard music online. Readers should note you should only ever attempt to download classical music which falls within the public domain, it is illegal to try and download free transcriptions of popular songs.

Firstly, let’s address finding classical sheet music, because these pieces of music are in the public domain they belong to all of us, so any member of the public can access them. Beware that many sites will let you download keyboard music for a fee, this isn’t necessary, if you type the name of the composer and song into your search engine, followed by ‘free keyboard music’, 90% of the time you will find what you’re looking for within the first 10 results.

Some rare classical music can be more difficult to find, in these cases I find the best course of action is to download a free midi version of my desired track and playing the file in a ‘midi  to sheet music’ converter, this program will analyse the track, identify the notes and map them out in the form of sheet music. Although the resulting sheets will not be as well presented as the ones you can purchase, songs are transcribed 100% accurately.

If you fail to find a downloadable midi file of your desired track I would advise searching for a video tutorial of the song in question, in my opinion this the better than using sheets because in many cases an actual music teacher is instructing you. The different camera angles make identifying the correct notes a breeze and I can’t recommend this method enough to anyone looking to the internet to learn their favourite songs.

So there you have it, a few different ways to find free sheet music online, including an extremely effective alternative which I recommend more than any other. As an afterthought I would like to advise any musicians to avoid relying too heavily on sheet music and attempt to play songs by ear, you will learn the music much faster and will develop further as a musician.
