Guitars for Kids – A Buyer’s Guide
Buying guitars for kids can be a rather tricky business because most of the time the difference between toy guitars and 3 4 guitars isn’t that distinct. If you’re feeling lost in the vast amount of guitar brands out there and are looking for something to point you in the right direction then you’ve come to the right place. I’m going to assume you have no prior experience with guitars and simply suggest a couple of cheap guitars for kids that should be perfect for your child’s needs.
First I would like to state that kids guitars, or 3 4 guitars as they are commonly referred to, are not cheap instruments. On the contrary, some of the models on offer are just as expensive as their full sized cousins and provide the same high quality too. Although many people assume that guitars for kids are much cheaper than standard guitars, this isn’t always the case and you may be disappointed is this is the only reason you’re considering buying one.
In my opinion, the Baby Taylor is the best acoustic guitar for kids on the market today. Taylor is considered one of the US’s greatest guitar manufacturing companies and this quality is embodied in the Baby Taylor acoustic guitar. Taylor have of course needed to cut some corners in order to reduce costs and enable it to compete with the other kids guitars on the market, but this guitar is still a solid performer.
The Baby Taylor has a Sitka spruce top and mahogany neck. The back and sides of this guitar also finished with a mahogany veneer which makes it look awesome and far more expensive than it really is. Many artists have actually utilized the Baby Taylor for live playing and recording, the smaller scale of this acoustic means it can be used to reproduce mandolin type effects. All in all the 3 4 Taylor guitar is a quality instrument and in my opinion far superior than any other kids guitar on the market. This instrument only costs £250 ($380) and yet its sound is so clear and crisp you’d be convinced it was a higher-end instrument.
The Baby Taylor is all well and good, but if you want an electric guitar it obviously won’t cut it. After extensive testing and research I can quite confidently say that the Squier Mini 3 4 is my number 1 electric kids guitar on the market. The Mini Squier has everything you could possibly want in a kid’s instrument. Its Stratocaster shape makes it incredibly easy to play, string bends and barre chords are so much easier to perform on this guitar because its action is so low. It’s maple C-shape neck also gives the player all the freedom they require to access the higher frets, its cutaway shape ensure that you can get right down to the 20th fret with ease.
The Mini Squier is also hugely versatile, but that is to be expected seen as though it was based on one of the most tonally diverse 6-strings ever produced, the Fender Stratocaster. This electric features 3 single coil pickups controlled by a 5-way switch to control the sound. By mixing up the tones of the neck, middle and bridge pickups I’m confident this guitar can play any musical style and that really is the key to a great beginner’s guitar. This versatility means that you are using the perfect canvass to find your own unique playing style.
As a final note I would like to point out that readers shouldn’t be tempted by the huge amount of cheap guitars for kids which are introduced during the holiday periods. Whilst these instruments may seem like a great deal at the time, generally they turn out to be nothing more than children’s toys and are completely unsuitable to learn on.
