Everyone knows how hard it can be to get your hands on the perfect sound system; the fact of the matter is the casual buyer doesn’t understand which components work well together or how to set them up properly. I recently purchased a subwoofer amplifier and was startle to discover that there is barely any goof information on this subject, so I’ve tried to compile all the things you need to know about buying a subwoofer amp right here.

If you want your subwoofer to produce a really awesome sound you will need to purchase a suitable amplifier to go with it. Buying the cheapest amp you can find is not the best way to approach this; more often than not a poor quality amp will just result in distortion and bring down the quality of your entire system. An even worse case it that you’ll blow your subwoofer because cheap amps have been known to interfere with and even cut the signal being sent by the receiver.

Apart from the subwoofer amplifier itself you also need to seriously consider purchasing a capacitor for it too. Many people avoid doing this because it isn’t actually a necessity but these are really great at boosting the performance of your sub and will help maintain constant power to it. It’s good practice to use 1 farad per every 1000 watts (RMS), by doing so you reduce the possibility of frying your alternator.

It is essential that you consider subwoofer amplifiers which have a power output which is equivalent to the power of the input being sent to it by the subwoofer. If your amplifier has an impedance of 500 watts then the subwoofer you connect it to will also need to be running at 500 watts. If you fail to match up the relative power of both components correctly you won’t be achieve the maximum audio potential and you may find that your subwoofer and amp don’t work together at all.

If you feel you’re not confident enough to choose and install a subwoofer amplifier yourself then you’re best off consulting the staff working at your local electronics store. They should have trained audio engineers in the store to advise you and they may even be able to complete the installation for you.

The Receiver is undoubtedly the most important single component of any home theatre system; many would argue that the centre speaker comes right behind it in second place. Despite this fact there are relatively few information sources that specifically address this component and provide an informative set of guidelines to help you figure out which type you need. I’ve written this article to help out anyone who’s looking for the best centre speaker for their needs.

First of let’s address the obvious question, what does a center channel speaker actually do? This component is actually responsible for delivering all of the dialogue from the film to your ears. Unlike other sounds the vocals actually come at you straight from the TV rather than from the sides to ensure clarity and accuracy. Industry experts agree that the best way to actually purchase a home theatre system is to find a receiver and speaker set which actually work well together and complement one another.

The amount of work someone is required to properly set up an audio system varies between the models. Recently many manufacturers are offering all in one home theatre systems which feature all of the components in one box already configured for you. This takes some of the complexity out of finding different components that complement each other and trying to fit them all together. In fact the only thing you really need to do with these all in one home theatre systems is to position the speakers for optimum acoustics. Once you’ve calibrated the system there’s not much you can actually do to improve the system, in all most all cases purchasing a higher quality receiver (in an attempt to boost the system) isn’t an option because it wouldn’t be compatible.

This is where the importance of the centre speaker really becomes apparent, because this component isn’t always top of the range in these made home theatre sets replacing it with one that is will shoot the performance of your audio system through the roof. The simply matter of upgrading the central channel speaker will actually double its performance. Of course doing so would be hugely expensive and it would be much cheaper to simply buy a better performing component system.

Ideally you want to be spending £150-£350 ($250-$500) on a central speaker, it is by far and away the most expensive type of speaker in a system but that’s because to drastically improve the audio quality of anything you’re watching. In terms of power ratings, you need to make sure the centre channel speaker you purchases matches up with that of the receiver. A receiver with 1, 000 watts (RMS) should be connected to a central speaker between 200 and 400 watts (RMS). I find that a 400 watt center speaker will run perfectly on a 1000 watt receiver.

When selecting a centre channel speaker you need to ensure that other sounds and background noise isn’t leaking in to it from the other speakers. The central speaker is designed for dialogue and actor’s voices, if your speaker cannot properly differentiate between the two you will find that conversations and background noises become merged into one and aren’t as clear as they could be. This often results in the annoying practice of actually having to adjust the volume between action and dialogue scenes because the volume levels for one aren’t suitable for the other.

This ‘audio leaking’ becomes less apparent the more money you’re prepared to spend on the centre speaker, a top of the range model will eradicate this phenomenon completely, leaving you with crisp and clear dialogue. At this point your surround sound speakers can focus on delivering the background sound information as they were originally intended to do. Home theatre speakers are actually designed to perform different functions and deliver different types of audio, cheaper systems aren’t able to properly differentiate the different sound sources and assign them to the various different speakers, resulting in much poorer audio quality.

A Yamaha grand piano is about as good as it gets in my eyes, if you’ve been playing the piano for a few years and feel like you’ve out grown your previous model then you’d do very well to take a look at the manufacturer’s GB1 model. That being said, this instrument isn’t without its flaws.

The Yamaha GB1 is currently the cheapest baby grand the manufacturer has in production. In their eternal quest to provide the best quality at the most affordable prices many have criticised them for trying to cut too many corners and sacrificing quality in the name of a good deal. But what exactly is being sacrificed?

The best quality pianos always feature under covered hammers, these are in placed to protect the tone of the instrument and ensure the high quality sound is maintained throughout its life time. The GB1 doesn’t feature this protection because it would prompt an added expense to the customer. At present we have no way of knowing how the tone of this model will change over time and if this cost cutting measure will cause the instrument to lose sound quality prematurely. But it is a concern that many experts have raised.

The manufacturers of the GB1Yamaha baby grand piano also decided not to feature duplex scaling on the instrument to bring down the cost of the instrument but this isn’t without after effects. In general terms the more freely a string can resonate, the richer sound it will produce. It is common practice for piano makers to apply duplex scaling to an instrument in order to for the ends of the strings to vibrate unhindered by the cloth commonly used to dampen them. They different between the two scaling methods is very apparent in the tone of the piano, often one gets the feeling the GB1 doesn’t quite excel tonally as well as it could do if greater attention would have been made to the finer details.

Many pianists have also expressed their concerns about the lifting music desk features on this Yamaha grand piano as well, almost ever grand piano in production today features sliding music desk instead. These are much more effective than the former type because they allow pianists to adjust the distance of the deck in order for them to see the music sheets more clearly.

Of course the GB1 Yamaha grand piano is the perfect choice for less experienced players or those on a budget. These design flaws, perhaps flaws is the wrong word seen as though the manufacturer did them intentionally to reduce cost, are going to be more noticeable to advanced player. This instrument is still an amazing performance and provides superb value for the money. The GB1’s tone is superb; the keys are incredibly responsive and easy to play. Yamaha grand piano prices usually start off at least £10,000 ($16,000) so you really cannot complain at the £7,000 ($10,000) asking price.

If you own a large CD collection such as mine you will know how much space they can take up and what handful they can be to maintain. Fortunately there are a variety of different storage mediums for us music lovers to choose from. But figuring out which type of CD storage units to purchase is problem in and of itself.

Choosing CD storage units is a bit of a balancing act, different style units have different characteristics and come with their own unique benefits and it’s up to you to determine what works and what doesn’t. If you want a unit that is going to act as a kind of centre piece to whichever room it is in then you may want to consider a large CD cabinet. A CD storage cabinet is probably more noted for its appearance than its actual ability to store CDs, when you think about it for the amount of floor space they take up and their overall size they don’t really give you that much storage space. In fact it would be far cheaper if you purchased a series of CD wallets, and cheaper too. But then again you can’t beat a good mahogany cabinet which perfectly complements its surrounding furniture; it would make a fantastic focal point for any house.

The downside is that these cabinets can cost anywhere from £200-£2000 ($300-$3500) and in the majority of cases they can’t hold more than 800 CDs. When you consider that a £1 ($2) CD wallet can hold up to 100 CDs and take up none of the floor space it may seem like a fairly bad decision, but each to their own. CD wallets are also extremely portable and are easily accessible, whether you like to listen to music in the car or at the office they will do you just fine. Of course they don’t strictly come under the category of CD storage units.

CD racks are in my opinion probably the best alternative for people who want their music on display but don’t want to pay a hefty price for them. These racks can cost between £20-£200 ($30-$300) and are quite handy to have around the house. Wall mounted racks are a superb idea for those of you who are worried about the amount of free space a media storage cabinet is going to take up, they are also positioned to aid accessibility to your CDs. If you’re like me and don’t want all of your CDs in one place you may also want to consider having several of these cabinets strategically placed around the house in so you can quickly find music from any room in your house.

CD storage boxes can be another great alternative, these units allow you to fit a large number of CDs in a small place which is ideal for those of you who don’t have much storage space. Another added benefit of using them is the protection they offer, many come with security mechanisms and child locks in order to prevent your CDs coming to any preventable harm. You can purchase a CD storage box from between £3-£100 ($5-$150), although the more expensive versions tend to focus more on providing an attractive outer shell rather than added storage space.

If you value space and storage capacity I would recommend CD wallets or CD boxes over large CD storage units. But if you really want something that’s going to be a focal point for your home then more expensive CD cabinets may be more suited for the purpose.

If you purchase a lot of CDs chances are sooner or later you’re going to need a CD storage rack or other alternative to help store your collection. I know from personally experience how fast a stack of CDs can mount up; you don’t even need to be a massive music fan or even purchase discs that often to run into problems. I regularly get free CDs with magazines which seem like a great treat up until I need to figure out where to put it.

There are a whole range of different storage solutions on the market to choose from, what does a CD storage rack do better than any other alternative? First of all it will take up a lot less space than large a CD cabinet because they are designed to use space more efficiently. Let’s face it, the vast majority of storage cabinets people use in their homes are way too big for their needs and consume far too much space as well. The fact of the matter is the majority of these cabinets double a focal points to the room in which they are in, this might make for a nice centre piece but doesn’t really utilize your living space to its maximum potential.

Furthermore, you can purchase a CD storage rack in practically any size you need. If you want your entire CDs in one place (not advisable) there are some racks which can store anywhere between a few hundred to over a thousand CDs in one place, and because CD racks can be mounted from walls they don’t have to take up any of your floor space. It’s the best of both worlds. Having said this I find it more much useful to own several CD storage racks in order to spread out my music across various rooms in my house for easy accessibility. Organising a collection into several different units makes it far easier to find what you’re looking for because you don’t have to wade through every CD you own each time you look.

A CD DVD storage rack is also far more affordable than a CD storage cabinet. A standard priced media back should set you back no more than £30 ($45) and is capable of storing anywhere between 100 to 250 CDs, whilst a storage cabinet will generally cost in the region of at least £100-£200 ($150-$330) and allow you to store up to 400 CDs. These figures may not mean much to you but it just so happens that CD cabinets take up more space, are more expensive and don’t generally offer anymore storage room for your money. In simple terms you’re paying out the extra money for the aesthetics of the unit rather than its functionality. Many of you may be quite happy to do this, but when you way up the benefits of using CD racks it doesn’t really make sense to waste your money in this way.

All in all, the CD storage rack is a far cheaper solution for holding your media than any other large cabinet. These racks will also save you floor space (especially if you purchases a wall-mounted model) and provide you with more storage space for your money.

The Roland Boss DR 880 is one of those pieces of equipment which offers everything for all purposes. I’m actually finding it difficult to pin down exactly what this is because it has so many different functions. It can act as a bass guitar synthesizes, keep a drum beat and guitar effects box. If Roland really has tried to pack in as much functionality into this box as they possibly can and they’ve pulled it off really, if you’re a few players short of a full band, the DR 880 drum rhythm machine can act as an awesome replacement bassist or drummer.

Having plenty of features is great but it doesn’t really mean much if they can’t be utilized and applied in a real world setting. So what will musicians get out of using this product? Most notably for guitarists are the built in guitar effects, the DR 880 comes with 50 preset effects to choose from and allows users to actually customize effects for themselves. The effects are access by switching on the button labelled ‘effects’ and turning the master value dial through the various different settings. What’s great about using these digital effects is that the user has superb control over each one; there are various parameters which can be adjusted to hone each one to your preferences. Amongst these parameters are a Noise Suppressor, Chorus and Amp Simulator.

One of the main reasons someone might consider purchasing the Roland Boss DR 880 is because of its ability to play both drum and bass sounds. If you’re a one man band or you don’t have enough people together to form a complete band you can actually use this unit to fill in as a drummer or bassist during your performances. Unsurprisingly this unit feels and responds like Boss drum machine, they offer you the ability to generate rhythm sounds in much the same way. If you just want to apply a nice drum pattern to your playing as quickly as possible the 500 pre-installed rhythms will work, they take seconds to apply and they’ll never skip a beat. If you want to add a little character to these patterns you’ve also got the ability to edit them by applying high-hat, percussion and bass guitar effects using the E-Z compose. It’s a bit tricky to get the hang of at first but there’s not much of a learning curve, a few hours of practice will be more than enough to create a great beat.

Of course it isn’t all good news, ever system has it flaws and the DR-880 is no different. The biggest issue I had with this unit was the manufacturers have left no way to expand the memory. Nowadays there are barely any fixed memory products on the market because modern users want a lot of space. Another big fault is the inability to backup several files at once, the system lets you export the various rhythm patterns you’ve created but there’s no way of actually transferring them all at once. Which means you have to painstakingly upload them one track at a time, which could take a while if you’ve created a lot of patterns. One more trait which really bugs me about this product is that for some peculiar reason you cannot apply the loop feature more than once during any track. I really don’t get why they’ve done this because looping is a basic feature and incredibly useful to scroll through the different sections of a song, now they’ve just made using it a lot more frustrating.

All in all I have to say that I really endorse any musician buying the DR-800, the rhythm sounds sound and feel really realistic and are as good as any other Boss drum machines on the market today. I find myself looking over my shoulder to check there isn’t a really drummer playing behind me when I’m using it. All the guitar effects, recording, tempo features are really useful and easy to apply too. The sophisticated beat-by-beat function is another superb feature which can be used to control and adjust the accompaniment you’re using when you’re performing. The Roland Boss DR 800 retails for around £320 ($500) and I would fully recommend it to any musician who wants to practice or gig with an all-in-one backing band.

If you’re on the market for a really formidable 12 inch the Velodyne Impact 12 subwoofer might be just the thing for you. This product has received rave reviews by many of the leading audio engineers and has been praised as one of the most practical subwoofers you can get. However, the Impact 12 does have its critics; many believe that its lack of fluidity makes it rather sluggish and unsuitable to listen to music with.

The Impact series are a line of low cost, high output subwoofers which are ideal for user’s who love big bass tones and aren’t too concerned about fluidity in their music. Most will agree that all of the models in this range are pretty sweet looking bits of hardware; Impact cabinets are beautifully lacquered with a black trim which means they will complement any flat panel TV and modern furniture you’ve got in your media room.

The Impact 12 subwoofer is designed for one thing, to pack a punch and deliver a lot of bass, and it delivers over and over again. Velodyne’s new model achieves its high bass levels by featuring a much deeper cabinet than many of its previous models. The Impact 12 is a no nonsense subwoofer which gets straight down to the point, it’s bass level are awe inspiring and perfect for anyone who wants their sound system to have a powerful ‘boom effect’.

The reason people love this subwoofer is because its bass depth is pretty amazing for the price you’re paying. 9 times out of 10 it’ll outshine any other similarly priced subwoofer on the market, which counts for a lot if you want the louder system on the block. 2 inch dual layer copper wound voice coil serves to keep the bass tones nice and tight by reducing any distortion which might usually be experienced when playing music at extreme levels. The fact of the matter is the Impact 12 subwoofer can serve your needs just fine if power is what you’re after, even if the room it’s situated in has several large openings it is still likely to deliver more than enough power.

Now for the bad news, despite its undeniable power this subwoofer still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to actually playing music. This might be fair enough if it failed to deliver on slow songs because no one would really want to use this kind of subwoofer for quieter music. But even more powerful rock songs like Metallica’s Fuel loses a lot of the aggressive energy it once had and is replaced by a very noticeable dullness which doesn’t serve the music justice.

The Velodyne Impact 12 retails for around £250 ($340) and is an incredible bargain, if you purchase a corresponding 12 inch subwoofer box to go with it you’re sound system it would be able to pack some phenomenal power. Incidentally, if it is outright bass and high impact volume you’re looking for you couldn’t do much better than checking out a series of band pass enclosed subwoofer boxes to find one which really make the system scream.

All in the entire Velodyne Impact 12 subwoofer is a class act, in my opinion it’s probably the perfect addition to a home theatre. If you’re looking for a product to add depth to your music collection you probably won’t find it hear; but casual listeners won’t be disappointed with its performance either. On a final note, I would advise anyone who is looking for out and out power to consider a corresponding 12” subwoofer box which will really push your sound system to its maximum potential.

If you’re on the market for a new mini speaker system then the following products are tailored to meet your needs. Whether you need a set of portable speakers to go travelling with or you’re just intent on finding an audio solution which will fit discretely into your home, any of the items mentioned in this article will be perfect for your needs.

The I-MU mini speaker is one of the more sophisticated pieces of tech on the market today; this product effectively turns whatever surface you have placed it on into a speaker. It does this by using vibrations to flow through your table, desk or cabinet. It’s quite an ingenious concept and is executed very successfully, the sound quality of the I-MU is superb and it’s designed to use a minimal amount of energy.

The iBlock is the perfect portable speaker system for those who need product that can fit straight into your pocket. The design might not be to everyone’s tastes, the manufacturers have modelled the unit on Lego, and I think it pulls the look off quite well too. Many users might be put off by the fact that it doesn’t appear to have any visible buttons, but its user interface is quite intuitive so you’ll undoubtedly get the hang of it straight away. For £12.99 ($20) I think it’s a real bargain, especially considering it only weighs 15g!

The iDuck is probably the most peculiar set of wireless mini speakers on the market today. The unit takes the form of a waterproof duck which floats in the bath and uses Bluetooth to connect to your IPOD. The whole system is designed to avoid you putting your IPOD at any unnecessary risk and has a working wireless range of up to 10 meters. At £22.47 ($33) it may be a bit gimmicky for some users but it definitely gets the job done.

The Spring mini speaker sounds awesome; despite the fact that the whole unit can fit in the palm of your hand it’s actually capable of producing some really awesome bass levels. The speaker can be connected to practically any audio player you can think of and is the ideal product for music lovers on the go. At just under £20 ($30) I really can’t fault this product for the price.

The Logic 3 iStation are a feat of modern engineering. Despite the small size of these mini stereo speakers, they are small enough to fit in a glove compartment; they pack a whopping 4 watts so you’re able to get some serious audio levels out of this product. With the ability to be folded up and stored anywhere and its huge sound capacity, the Logic 3 is a really great bargain for just under £20 ($30).

The Altec Lansing Orbit-M is one of the more innovative mini speaker systems on this list; the unit provides users an impressive 360 degree sound and sounds awesome too. This speaker is built to last, it looks like a standard CD case but you can tell that it can take a whole lot of punishment. With up to a full days worth of battery and retailing at £30 ($45), this really is a best buy.

The XMI X-mini II is probably the most sophisticated mini speaker on the market today. It may look small but the manufacturers have specially designed it to pack a huge amount of power in a small amount of space. Any tracks you play with this baby will be enjoyed in all the fullness of their original recording and won’t leave anything to be desired. Retailing at £22 ($33) I personally think this is the best perfuming speaker system for the money.

A speaker bar is the perfect solution for people who want to experience the full sound of a 5.1 speaker system but don’t want to have to put up with all of the clutter that such a large system warrants. In most cases speaker bars are the best solution for this problem because they provide users with a much better sound quality than other speakers that you can just add onto your PC. This article compiles everything you need to know about these systems in a collection of easy to understand paragraphs.

Many Industry experts are raving about the performance and practicality of speaker bars, but what actually makes them so great? First of all, if you purchase one of these bars you will eradicate the need to purchase any other satellites which many other speaker systems would require. By having only one piece of hardware to deal with you are freeing up more space in your entertainment room and your house will look a lot tidier too.

Setting up and installing your system will be much easier too because a speaker bar only consists of one component. This means there will only be a handful of wires to connect and it can be placed quite conveniently under your TV for quick access. The vast majority of the vast majority of these speakers are now designed to blend seamlessly into any modern home, meaning the system will fit right in with your flat screen TV.

Some of the more sophisticated models on the market can also create a really realistic, high quality surround sound effect which sounds quite impressive even if it doesn’t quite match 5.1 surround sound systems. This is accomplished using sophisticated signal processing technology to actually trick your senses into believing that the sound waves are actually coming from the back and sides of the room, rather than from straight in front of you. This effect can be enhanced by adding a subwoofer; in fact many experts believe using one is essential to fully experience the effect to its maximum potential. If you own a surround sound speaker bar you will be required to add a separate receiver to make the whole thing work effectively.

The Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 is the perfect sound bar for any person who wants to achieve a truly awesome surround sound experience from their system. Many experts agree that the SSA-50 has actually pushed the boundaries of what people believe these types of speakers can actually do. This model is most for providing a more refined and accurate sound which resembles a top performing 5 channel satellite system. This has been achieved by placing the tweeters in front of the mid/bass drivers or their respective channels, a practice which isn’t used in most similar speakers of this kind.

The Mythos SSA-50 from Definitive Technology currently retails for around £300 ($450) on EBay which is spectacularly good value for money. The speaker bar includes a wall mounted bracket and comes in a 46-inch wide slim aluminium cabinet too. I personally believe this product to be one of the best sound bar systems on the market today, it’s a shame it doesn’t come with an AV receiver or table stand, but it’s still very good value for money.

In conclusion, a home theatre sound bar system can provide a really awesome surround sound system without the need for multiple satellites cluttering up your room. They might not match the performance levels of 5.1 speaker systems quite yet but they are certainly getting there. These would be the perfect speaker for anyone who wants to enjoy a fully surround sound experience without the hassle that some of the larger systems can bring.

Microsoft Media Player 9 first began to gain popular around 2003, since then there have been numerous upgrades made to the system, at the time of writing Windows has actually published its 11th instalment to the system. Of course there are many different media players being offered by various different companies, so what makes this product any different than anything else?

One of the most attractive things about this product and any of its other instalments is that it’s absolutely free. That’s right; you can find the Media Player 9 free download on Microsoft’s website. Despite the fact that you don’t have to pay anything for the player, it still remains one of the most sophisticated and usable packages of its kind on the market.

This software allows you to play both audio and video files which you have either purchased from your local music store or downloaded from the net. But it’s more than just a music player, it also acts as a CD burner, internet radio tuner and a media guide too. After so many years of constant improvements and upgrades this system offers far more than just the ability to listen to your music. One of my personal favourite features is its CD Rip function which allows you to save all of the files within an audio CD onto your computer. This may seem like a fairly standard function, but combine it with its incredibly easy to use CD Burner and you got the simplest way to copy your CDs that you’ll ever come across.

When compiling my research and testing out the software for the Microsoft Media Player 9 Review I really develop an appreciation for this software’s song rating feature which I hadn’t previously. This Media Player’s shuffle system is far more sophisticated than on most players, it actually relies on the user’s feedback to determine which songs to play and how often then will appear in a random playlist. If you give a track 5 stars you’re going to hear that song repeated more regularly, similarly, if you give a song 1 star or less it will rarely be played. Of course the performance of this rating system is all relatives to the rating you assign your music, if you have hundreds of 5 star tracks they can’t all be played as regularly.

The beauty of this software package lies in it’s practically and incredible usability. Every aspect of this system has been rigorously tested to ensure that its menus are as intuitive and easy to grasp as physically possible. Even the least technology savvy users should have no problem at all using this media player.

Of course this software has its drawbacks, most programs do. Unfortunately the media player isn’t as versatile as some of the other options available to users. I often get frustrated when this software can’t open a file because it isn’t compatible with the format. The player works like a dream with MP3 and WMA files, but it does tend to have trouble playing other formats. If you ever experience any trouble playing any files with this software I would really advise you to check the VLC player, this is another piece of free software which is much more versatile.

All in all I’ve got to say that Microsoft Media Player 9 is a pretty sweet piece of software. Sure it has its compatibility issues but it’s incredibly easy to use and makes burning files onto a CD a breeze too. If you ever find the need for a good media player, don’t hesitate to download its latest version.
