A Review of the Epiphone Les Paul standard plus Honeyburst
I’ve recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul standard plus Honeyburst electric guitar after many months of contemplation. The reason I waited so long to buy it is because despite the fact that I loved the way it sounds and has an excellent build quality, I couldn’t help but be affected by the guitar community’s rather low view of Epiphone guitars. I am very happy that I chose to go ahead with my purchase in the end because it proved that their criticisms were just another complete stereotypical generalisation. There are many reviews about the Epiphone Les Paul Standard on the net but I wanted to add my two cents as well. I believe this excellent guitar has been thoroughly misrepresented in the majority of online threads and I wanted to put an end to this.
My new Epiphone Les Paul standard plus Honeyburst sounds awesome when playing any 80’s style rock or more alternative music such as the Foo Fighters. The guitar’s dual Alnico classic humbuckers produce a really clear and crisp clean sound and also pack a real punch when played through over drive. The music I play tends to mix in melodic clean passages with heavy rock riffs so I needed to make sure any instrument I bought was versatile enough to cope with this. I’m confident that if you adjust the tone settings on this guitar and your amp, you can attain any sound you want. The Epiphone Standard is a hugely versatile instrument and really can be used for almost any musical style.
Like all Epiphone electric guitars the sustain on the Standard is awesome. If you’re into hugely melodic Slash like solos you will love this guitar. I’d be willing to bet that this Epiphone could hold a note for twice as long as the majority of other electrics on the market.
I personally haven’t seen a single flaw in the craftsmanship of my Epiphone. The guitar looks sturdy and solid, and so far nothing has come loose. I have heard many guitarists state that the fretwires have a tendancy to come loose on some models and the strap buttons commonly fall off too. But I don’t forsee this being a problem, it seems the manufacturer is constantly improving their models and I do believe these problems aren’t common on the newest versions. The only actual criticism I could mount against this instrument is that it doesn’t come in a huge variety of finishes, I do believe that the Epiphone Les Paul standard plus Honeyburst version looks really awesome but I would like to have has a greater selection of colours to choose from.
From what I’ve seen so far I really can’t rate the Epiphone Les Paul Standard highly enough. It’s absolutely perfect for rock and alternative music and appears to be really durable. The guitar retails at around £400 ($650), which makes it cheaper than the Custom Epiphone Les Paul and in my opinion is an even better performer. Even players who are concerned that the strap buttons will come loose and send the guitar plummeting to the floor during a gig can always prevent this problem by attaching locking strap buttons.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a cheap Epiphone Les Paul which sounds great live and is completely suitable for recording, I definitely would recommend the LP Standard. I fell in love with this instrument as soon as I brought it home and I only regret that I didn’t buy it sooner.
