The Velodyne Impact 12 Subwoofer
If you’re on the market for a really formidable 12 inch the Velodyne Impact 12 subwoofer might be just the thing for you. This product has received rave reviews by many of the leading audio engineers and has been praised as one of the most practical subwoofers you can get. However, the Impact 12 does have its critics; many believe that its lack of fluidity makes it rather sluggish and unsuitable to listen to music with.
The Impact series are a line of low cost, high output subwoofers which are ideal for user’s who love big bass tones and aren’t too concerned about fluidity in their music. Most will agree that all of the models in this range are pretty sweet looking bits of hardware; Impact cabinets are beautifully lacquered with a black trim which means they will complement any flat panel TV and modern furniture you’ve got in your media room.
The Impact 12 subwoofer is designed for one thing, to pack a punch and deliver a lot of bass, and it delivers over and over again. Velodyne’s new model achieves its high bass levels by featuring a much deeper cabinet than many of its previous models. The Impact 12 is a no nonsense subwoofer which gets straight down to the point, it’s bass level are awe inspiring and perfect for anyone who wants their sound system to have a powerful ‘boom effect’.
The reason people love this subwoofer is because its bass depth is pretty amazing for the price you’re paying. 9 times out of 10 it’ll outshine any other similarly priced subwoofer on the market, which counts for a lot if you want the louder system on the block. 2 inch dual layer copper wound voice coil serves to keep the bass tones nice and tight by reducing any distortion which might usually be experienced when playing music at extreme levels. The fact of the matter is the Impact 12 subwoofer can serve your needs just fine if power is what you’re after, even if the room it’s situated in has several large openings it is still likely to deliver more than enough power.
Now for the bad news, despite its undeniable power this subwoofer still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to actually playing music. This might be fair enough if it failed to deliver on slow songs because no one would really want to use this kind of subwoofer for quieter music. But even more powerful rock songs like Metallica’s Fuel loses a lot of the aggressive energy it once had and is replaced by a very noticeable dullness which doesn’t serve the music justice.
The Velodyne Impact 12 retails for around £250 ($340) and is an incredible bargain, if you purchase a corresponding 12 inch subwoofer box to go with it you’re sound system it would be able to pack some phenomenal power. Incidentally, if it is outright bass and high impact volume you’re looking for you couldn’t do much better than checking out a series of band pass enclosed subwoofer boxes to find one which really make the system scream.
All in the entire Velodyne Impact 12 subwoofer is a class act, in my opinion it’s probably the perfect addition to a home theatre. If you’re looking for a product to add depth to your music collection you probably won’t find it hear; but casual listeners won’t be disappointed with its performance either. On a final note, I would advise anyone who is looking for out and out power to consider a corresponding 12” subwoofer box which will really push your sound system to its maximum potential.
